Malaysian Communications Wants Facebook page shut down -

KUALA LUMPUR – THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police have started investigations into a Facebook account owner for allegedly insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

The commission’s strategic communications senior director Sheikh Raffie Abd Rahman said MCMC was assisting the police in the probe.

“MCMC is aware of a Facebook account belonging to an individual by the name of ‘Chow Jack’, who had made comments on social media deemed sensitive with regards to religion and culture.

“We have also received several complaints from the public, who have called for immediate action to be taken against the Facebook account owner.

“The commission is assisting the police, which has started its investigation into the case,” Sheikh Raffie said yesterday.

He also advised the public to stay calm and avoid sharing the comments issued by the Facebook account owner.

A statement from the police could not be obtained at press time. However, in its official Facebook page, the police said it was working closely with MCMC.

The alleged Facebook account owner, believed to be in his early 20s, had used vulgar words in his posting against Muslims in conjunction with Ramadan. He also made disparaging remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

Netizens have vented their anger over the insulting remarks on a police Facebook page.

A user by the name of “Yan Ti” urged the police to investigate and take action against the culprit.

“Let it (the case) be a lesson to others,” she said.

Another Facebook user, Kamarazaman Ibrahim, called upon MCMC to come down hard on those who used social media to spread hatred.

Facebook user “Rom Tamjis” said social media should be used to cultivate harmony and productivity, and not hatred. -NST
