Tehran welcomes war with America, a leading Iranian general said in an interview on Iranian TV.
Deputy commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Hossein Salami delivered a series of threats to America on Iran’s Channel 1.
In the clip, translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), Salami said:
“I warn (the Americans) that we have built up our strength for the purpose of long, extended wars.”
He gave specific threats to American naval and air power, saying, “If they are relying on their aircraft carriers as a source of power, they should know that these carriers will be destroyed. If they use air bases (in the region) these will be burned. If they want to fly their airplanes they should know that all the skies will be set ablaze. I warn their pilots that their first flight will be their last and that none of them will return home safe and sound.”
Notably absent was any mention of the preferability of peace or a desire to reach an accord. Instead he said, “We welcome war with the Americans because we believe that it provides an arena in which we can demonstrate our success, our full potential and our true might.”
Salami finished by reaffirming that Iran was more than willing to walk away from negotiations.
“I recommend to our negotiating team that if the American negotiators use intimidations. threats and insults again in an effort to gain political superiority our team should leave the negotiating table and hand the matter over to the IRGC…”
